Ukrainian stew – Pechenia

Pechenia – is the national Ukrainian dish which consists of roasted or baked meat and vegetables.


  • 500 g pork
  • 10 potatoes
  • 100 g lard
  • 2 bulbs
  • 2 carrots
  • 50 g dried mushrooms
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 5 black eyed peas


Pour the mushrooms with 1 glass of water and boil them until they cook down. Cut pork into 4 pieces. Fry the meat until it gets golden color. Add tomato paste, some water and stew the pork.

Peel potato and carrot. Cube them and fry on the heated lard. Add sliced bulb onion, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients.

Place vegetables and meat in the brazier or jug. The vegetables should be at the bottom and at the top of the dish. Pour mushroom broth, add bay leaves, and salt. Stew the pechenia.

Peel and squeeze the garlic. Add it at the end of baking. Leave the pork for 5 minutes and serve.
