Mashed potato patties with meat (kartoplianyky)

Kartoplianyky is a popular traditional side dish in Ukraine. In such a way we call potato patties which are rather caloric and still extremely palatable. Mushrooms, cracklings, meat, cabbage, fish – all this ingredients you can use in order to stuff kartoplianyky. The mashed potato patties with meat which we are going to cook today are appetizing and quite solid so you can feed the whole family.


  • 290 g (10 oz) minced beef
  • 7 big potatoes
  • 1 egg
  • 2 bulb onions
  • 1/4 cup of fresh dill
  • 1 cup of flour
  • sunflower oil – to taste
  • spices – to taste
  • spring onions – to taste


Pour water in a pan, bring it to boil, salt and add rinsed potatoes. Boil them and after peel. Transfer the potatoes to a large bowl and mash them until smooth. Peel and chop bulb onions finely. Brown the onions till golden color. Then add the minced meat. Mix everything until well combined, cover the lid and simmer the mass stirring it continuously. Taste and adjust spices and salt.

Boil and peel an egg. Add the potato, 130 g (9/10 cup) of flour and finely cut dill. Knead the dough thoroughly. Divide it into portions and shape each portion into a patty. Place the prepared filling in the center of each pattyr. Fold the dough over to cover the mixture and crimp the edges. Dredge the patties in flour and fry them on suflower oil on both sides.

Serve the kartoplianyky hot with sour cream and chopped spring onions.
