Dumplings with salo

If you want to surprise your relatives with Ukrainian dish which you can serve on holiday and on week days? Then cook dumplings with salo following the traditional old recipe. Your family will definitely like it and the cooking of the dish will not take a lot of time.


  • 400 g flour
  • 1 egg
  • 50-70 g dairy butter
  • 200 g salo
  • 1/2 glass of ice water
  • 1 bulb onion
  • salt – to taste


Peel bulb onion and cube it with salo. Try salo over low heat and fry bulb onion till gold color.

Melt dairy butter. Add salt and egg. Mix everything properly. Then add ice water and flour. Knead dough and leave it for 30-40 minutes.

Roll the dough with layer thickness – 0.3 – 0.5 mm. Cut it into squares with 2 – 2 cm size each. Pinch inside the opposite edges of the square and pinch two other edges of the square – outside.

Place the dumplings in the salty boiling water. Mix the dumplings in order not to let them stick to each other.

Place the dumplings on a plate and pour them with salo and fried bulb onion.
